Instructions: Read the article. Then choose True or False.

School colors are very important. They can represent identity and are used on many different things, like school uniforms, flags, pencils, notebooks, sweaters, and car stickers. The colors are almost always worn to show school spirit, and pride. Even school songs usually mention the school colors. Did you know though that most schools have two different colors in order  to avoid conflicts with other schools in sports competitions?

Most school teams keep two sets of uniforms, with one design that uses the main school color and another that uses the second school color. In sports like American football, the main color is usually used for games played at home, or at the school, and the second color is used for games that are away, or played at a competing school. Strangely enough, in basketball the opposite takes place: the second color is used on uniforms for home games and the main color is used on uniforms for away games. This is all done to avoid confusion. In addition, groups that support the teams, like cheerleaders, dance groups, and marching bands wear uniforms to match those of the players. We couldn’t have a crowd of fans calling out the same color for different teams!

The most common uniform colors are purple, red, blue, green, and orange. These colors are often used with each other, for example red/blue, purple/green, blue/orange. Sometimes, though, they are matched with colors that represent a metal, such as black, white, brown, silver, or gold. In several instances we can see metal colors put together: black/silver, silver/gold, or white/gold. There are many sports teams, so a lot of color combinations are needed.

 1.

School colors can show spirit and pride.

 2.

Cheerleaders never wear the same colors as football players.

 3.

School colors such as gold and silver often represent metals.

 4.

Many school songs mention the school colors.

 5.

In basketball, the main color is only used for away games.
